The cardigan is a piece of clothing I always struggle with. Being petite, I find that I’m often limited to the waist-hugging styles, although I do love the long cardigan look. Also, what material do I buy it in? What colours do I go for?
I love knowing I have a few options to pick from, especially on days that I know I need a little bit of warmth, but I still struggle to pull this off in a chic manner. I don’t want to just look… sloppy.
I’ve done some research and found a few helpful tips – I call it the “art” of wearing a cardigan, because it’s the one piece of clothing I find a little more difficult to pair. And when I get it right, it looks like I’ve completed a masterpiece.
Belt it up
Something I like to do because cardigans are often shapeless. By adding a thin belt, you give the outfit a little bit of shape and structure.
Hit the floor
This is a style I personally know I can’t pull off, simply because I’m small in stature and not very tall. But if you’ve got the height for it, you could try wearing a floor-length cardigan with a shorter skirt or dress (to even out proportions).
Get preppy
If you have a high collar cardigan, you could button it up and go for that preppy look. Wear a statement necklace over, or pull out a collar over the cardigan to give it a little bit more flair.
Tuck it in
This is a style that I’ve only recently discovered. Tuck it into high-waisted skirts or pants, and it’ll give you a different look. Works best with cardigans that are form fitting and not oversized
Put it on reversed
If you have a cool cardigan, ideally a v-neck one, that looks just as great when worn backwards – go for it! I have yet to try this but I can just imagine how great this could look. Its also been featured on the runway during a Marc Jacobs show.
