Which is why the new Philips Zoom! Whitening treatment is introduced to the Malaysian market reccently as one of Philips’ vision to improve the lives of 3 billion people a year by 2025.
The Philips Zoom! Whitening treatment is said to deliver up to eight shades of whitening in just 45 minutes by removing the stains on the teeth’s surface through a chemical reaction, without harming the teeth’s enamel.
According to Dr Marilyn Ward, Director of Consumer and Dental Scientific Affairs for Philips Personal Health shared, “Philips Zoom! Whitening supports the science of teeth whitening. It contains ferrous gluconate which acts as a photo catalyst when applied onto the surface of the teeth. The gel reacts when exposed to LED light through the Philips Zoom! Whitespeed light technology, hence breaking down the particles in the yellow or brown stains, transforming the whiteness of the teeth in just 45 minutes.”
We sent our evangelist, Ren Chann to Artius Dental Specialist Centre at Menara See Hoy Chan to experience this new treatment.
This cozy dental office is one of the Philips Malaysia dental specialist partners which provides the Philips Zoom! Whitening Treatment. Before the whitening treatment, the dentist, Dr. How Vi Vien, takes Ren through a consultation process to find out about her lifestyle and teeth health.
After the consultation, Dr. How proceeds to check her teeth, gums and clean her teeth from any food remnants and tartar to ensure that it has a clean base before the whitening gel is put on her teeth.
Then she begins with the four-stage whitening process which takes only 15 minutes per stage, and is repeated in three cycles. In between each cycle, the Zoom! Whitening gel is reapplied.
- Stage One: The Philips Zoom! Whitening gel is applied onto the surface of the teeth.
- Stage Two: The chemical reaction takes places whereby peroxide – the yellow or brown
staining on teeth – reacts with the ferrous gluconate in the gel to produce radicals. - Stage Three: The Philips Zoom! Whitening gel immediately reacts with the LED light through a photo-fenton reaction.
- Stage Four: The light cyclically renews the iron and continues to produce radicals,
significantly producing whitening results over the span of the treatment.
It has 3 levels of intensity for the whitening treatment depending on your teeth’s condition, for Ren’s case, she was given the Medium-intensity level. If you have sensitive teeth, you’ll be given the Low-intensity treatment while if your teeth is very stained, the High-intensity treatment will be more suitable.
After 45 minutes, this is the result. Whiter teeth that’ll get you smiling all day.

Verdict
As Ren is someone who rarely drinks coffee and tea and does not smoke, her teeth were not very stained, hence, Dr. How did not have to do much cleaning before the whitening treatment. She did mention that she felt a few pinches during the cleaning process and a stinging sensation during the whitening process. But the stinging sensation wore off once the treatment is complete and her teeth were much cleaner and brighter! The only downside is that she has to be careful on what food she can eat for a week after the treatment to maintain the longevity of her pearly whites such as coloured fruits, drinks, vegetables and more.
