We’ve all experienced it at some point of our lives and some of us are chronic suffers – nothing seems to work! Dandruff can be caused by either a dry scalp, the flakes you see is actually the dry skin on your scalp. Or, it could be caused by an oily scalp, these are the type that stick to your scalp and can be pulled off from the roots. Not as flakey, but still very annoying.

How exactly can we get rid of dandruff and treat this recurring problem so many of us face? We have a few methods and we’ll share them with you below.

How to Treat Dandruff Effectively

Method 1: Treat your scalp

Many of us buy shampoo for our hair type without giving much regard to our scalp care. Invest in a scalp care treatment (either for dry scalp or oily scalp, whichever suits you) and do this on a regular basis. Phytoscience carries a pretty good range of scalp care treatments, and a few drops along your scalp go a long way. Massage the oil into your scalp, leave on for a few minutes and rinse off. Or, if you’re into natural products only, try an overnight coconut oil scalp treatment. Trust us – it may be a little time-consuming but it will help.

Method 2: Exfoliate your scalp

If you have flakes that stick to your scalp and the roots of your hair, you’ll need to exfoliate the flakes and before you shampoo. One way you could do this is use a paddle brush and gentle massage your entire scalp until you feel like you have loosened your flakes, once this is done use a clarifying (but gentle) shampoo and rub your scalp.

Method 3: Use a deep cleansing shampoo

We put a lot of stuff into our hair – from leave-in conditioners, to natural oils, dry shampoo, sprays, you name it. It’s no wonder that eventually we create a lot of product build-up and this may translate to clogged up pores on your scalp or chunks of dandruff. Use a deep cleansing shampoo like from Tresemme or Tsubuki to massage deeply into your scalp and cleanse it from any build-up residue.

Method 4: Use a dandruff shampoo

Using a dandruff shampoo will help your situation and help your scalp achieve the balance it needs – especially if it’s chronic. The Mayo Clinic recommends washing your hair every day with a dandruff shampoo until the flakes subside, and then continuing to wash your hair with the anti-dandruff shampoo 2-3 times per week. Leave the shampoo on for about 5 minutes before you wash it off, give the shampoo time to work. It’s worth noting that excessive shampooing, especially with harsher chemicals, such as lauryl sulfate, can irritate the scalp and dry it out, causing more dandruff.

If you’re really having trouble despite trying these methods, you could scour the internet for a few DIY methods but we wouldn’t guarantee their results. Alternatively, you could visit an expert or even any Aveda outlet in the malls – they do a hair and scalp analysis and could recommend the right products for you.
