We always hear about the tips and hacks to applying makeup the RIGHT way. But how about also understanding what NOT to do? That also makes it easier to know what we should stay away from.
With that in mind, we’ve gathered a few no-no’s of applying foundation. Things that you do not do, and well, suffice to say there are some lessons we’ve learned so we hope you pick up a few tips too!
Colour Matching Foundation
How many of you still test foundation on your hands when sampling differently shades? I do! I know it’s wrong and I’ve heard it before but we’re here to remind you once again, test your foundation at the base of your chin and along your jawline. Forget about your hand, you KNOW this won’t give you the right shade, so why do that?
Still not using Primer?
Big mistake. Primer was once a fad that not many people understood and thought it was a trend that would blow over. If you’re one of them, it’s time to get your act together and go on out to buy yourself a great primer. Smashbox is top choice and may be a splurge but you’re getting good value for what you pay for.
Primers not only help to prep your skin, tighten pores, give you an even complexion but it’s also great to keep your foundation on longer! It really works and now companies have developed a range of primers for different skin types.

Foundation Overkill
Ladies, the cake look is NOT a good look. Now trends are heading towards the natural direction, so stay away from piling on layers of foundation. The only time this might be acceptable is if it’s your wedding day and you know you’ll be sitting under some harsh lights and you’ll need to look flawless in all those photos. But then again, that’s probably the only time. Having foundation that’s too thick is not only not doing you any favours, it’s also a waste of makeup!

Use a Brush or Beauty Blender
Gone are the days when we apply foundation with our finger tips. This is bad for your skin as the bacteria gets into your pores and really, the amount of consistency and equal coverage you get with your fingers is not ideal. Use a foundation brush or beauty blender to ensure you get into all the areas evenly, even those tough to reach places, and to ensure it looks like one even layer.

Extend to Your Neckline
I often don’t bother with applying foundation past my face, and I know this is a mistake. Not only will the mismatch be obvious, but you’ll end up looking unfinished. I take my foundation brush and make gentle strokes down towards my neckline, this helps even out the skin tone and looks way better!
