The heat wave we’re currently experiencing in Malaysia is no laughing matter. Being summer all year round, we have no choice but to continue our lives as best as we can. That means Events are never scheduled during cooler seasons, because we don’t have any other season!
With sporting events, festivals, concerts, or even if you’re just out for some exercise, you’re exposing yourself to the strong UV rays and the sun. With the higher temperatures these days, there’s a very likely chance you may get a little sunburnt depending on how long you’re out there.
A few of us have just returned from the Spartan Race Malaysia event yesterday that was held in Klang, and boy the sunburns we’re now experiencing ain’t fun. ‘Tis the price you pay for forgetting to re-apply sunblock. So, how can you relieve those burns?

Cold water. Dip a cloth into either plain cold water, or add a few ice cubes and apply it over the burn. Repeat this every few minutes as the cloth warms and dries up. Do this several times a day for about 10-15 minutes each time. The cold water/ice will instantly provide that refreshing relief!
Yogurt, Oatmeal, Milk. It sounds good enough to eat but either 3 of these ingredients, or a combination of them in fact, is great for your sunburn. Apply onto your skin, you could even wrap it up into a cloth and create your own compress.
Avoid drying soap and do not rub skin. Most soaps dry out your skin which is the last thing you need for your already drier sunburnt skin. Also, do not rub your skin because this causes friction against your raw tender skin, imagine how that might not be so good for you. Ouch! Instead pat yourself with cold water, and gentle all natural soap (preferably) that has deep moisturising properties. You could look for soaps that have soothing properties or even aloe vera.
Moisturise big time. Your skins has been damaged by the sun’s UV rays and this isn’t a joke. You need to help repair your skin to bring it back to its natural state, and the best way to do that is to moisturise. Slather on the lotion and don’t give it more opportunities to feel dry and irritated. Aloe vera is a great ingredient to sooth hot skin and sunburns.
Hydrate. Drink up, water or juices and give your body the nutrients it needs to repair your skin. Drink as much water as you can.
Don’t take it lightly. If you experience any of the signs below, please do go see your doctor. Signs of severe sunburn can include:
- blistering or swelling of the skin
- chills
- a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above, or 37.5C (99.5F) or above in children under five
- dizziness, headaches and feeling sick
