In our pursuit of beauty products that help us combat the signs of ageing, and help us ensure we reveal and maintain the best state our skin has been in – it can get a little overwhelming with so many products to be incorporated into our skin care routine.
Initially, what was just a 3-step process: cleanse – tone – moisturise, has now expanded to include sunscreen, scrubs, masks, and face serums. What exactly are the benefits of using face serum and when is the best time to apply it? We’re here to share a few insights with you.
Benefits of Face Serum
- It’s a lightweight moisturiser but packed with concentrated vitamins that penetrates deeper into your skin. You can be assured that they will work to battle your skin care problem – interestingly enough, serums contain up to 70% of the active ingredient, whilst cleansers usually contain only 5 – 10%.
- Including it into your skin care routine is a choice you make – it’s not necessary but it can do wonders for your skin health
- The best kinds contain antioxidants like pomegranate extract, vitamin C and grape seed extract, anti-inflammatories like zinc, arnica, aloe vera and goldenseal, and hydrators such as ceramides, amino acids and essential fatty acids.
- Less is more so a bottle of face serum will go a long way, and because it works you’re getting value for money
Best time and way to apply face serums
While the benefits are quite clear, a serum won’t replace your daytime or nighttime moisturizer, but they will boost your anti-aging results and overall skin health when used morning and evening.
After you have applied toner, apply two to three pumps into your palm – serum works best in smaller amounts so a few drop sis all you need.
Rub it gently between your hands to warm it and (if applicable) mix it together. Then, press the serum onto your face, use the palm of your hands (not your finger tips) starting at your nose and working outward—never, ever rub. This ensures that all those beneficial ingredients really sink in, rather than just being smeared around.
Wait three to five minutes for the serum to fully penetrate, then move on to the next step.
Here’s another tip – apply it to damp skin. Some say that moist skin is 10 times more permeable than dry skin, so apply serum to damp skin after cleansing or mist skin with an alcohol-free toner for quick, deep absorption. Press serum into skin with an open palm instead of fingertips to release active ingredients.
The best kind of serums are those that absorb quickly into your skin and don’t leave an oily residue. You should also stay away from anything that is overly perfumed – those with the most natural ingredients are best.
