Everyone’s skin is different, but there are 5 main basic skin types – sensitive, oily, dry, combination, and normal. Some types may seem like they require extra care and attention, but that might not be the case with the right products…
The Pamper. My team and I aren’t strangers to SK-II’s range of products. In fact, we’ve tried and tested their products a year ago and we’re absolutely convinced by the results. This time, we are on a journey to put SK-II to the test and see if it really works for all skin types – especially since I have sensitive skin!
As someone with sensitive skin, I take extra caution when adding new products to my routine because my skin flinches easily – the presence of certain ingredients or compounds sometimes leaves me with burning, uncomfortable, red or irritated skin 🙁
Stress, plus the hot and humid weather, also worsens my skin’s sensitivity – which has been the case with the lockdown. Frankly, my skin hasn’t been happy since March and that has become an additional source of stress for me.
Somehow, our friends at SK-II learned about it and sent me a care package filled with their best-selling products. Maybe my breakouts were that noticeable on Zoom?
The thing about SK-II is that it’s meant to be suitable for all skin types. But anyone with sensitive skin knows that these claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. Here’s my tried and tested SK-II review.
The gentle power of SK-II and PITERA™
As someone with sensitive skin, my skincare philosophy is to keep it simple. A basic 3-step routine makes my skin happier than a thorough Korean 10-step routine.
The same applies when it comes to products.
The first thing I did when I embarked on this SK-II review was to check the ingredients.
To my delight, the PITERA™ Facial Treatment Essence had a concise ingredient list of less than 10 ingredients, and none of which were triggering to sensitive skin.
Already, I liked it.
Additionally, the Facial Treatment Essence contains 97% of their signature ingredient – PITERA™. If I’m going to apply something so highly concentrated to my sensitive skin, I’d better learn how it works.
What is PITERA™?PITERA™ is a yeast strain produced during the fermentation of sake. It is a natural bio-ingredient with 50+ micro-nutrients that restores and enhances skin health. It also…

Neat stuff. It really lives up to its nickname “miracle essence”.
For application, I pour a few drops of the essence straight into my hand, press palms together and smooth onto my skin. After, I gently pat in until the essence is fully absorbed. After the first application, I was happy to report that the Facial Treatment Essence got along with my hyper-reactive skin!
The essence is gentle and soothing, like a cooling mask. I experienced no redness or new breakouts and my skin was perfectly fine.
The lightweight, silky essence is also very easy to apply. Best thing is, it’s fragrance-free! A few drops were all I needed for my entire face and it absorbed so well. And quickly!
Most pleasantly, it also heals blotches and blemishes. Overtime, my skin began to see visible improvements in overall health and glow. This was after around two weeks of use. It’s no wonder SK-II always claims that PITERA™ Facial Treatment Essence gives you Crystal Clear Skin.
As gentle as the essence is, it’s also powerful. I wasn’t sure how well my skin would react to the product, so I started with 3 drops first instead of the recommended 5-7 drops. From there, I increased gradually as I saw fit.
The deal with moisturizing sensitive skin
Moisturizing sensitive skin is tricky.
Because our skin is so fussy, it takes a lot of experimenting to find the right product. And we have to do it to keep our skin healthy because good pore health means lesser skin problems.
Moisturizing for sensitive skin is like Goldilocks’ dilemma; the product can’t be too thick or else it’ll clog the pores, or too thin that it has no effect. It has to be just right.
That’s why… I was apprehensive about the SK-II R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion at first because the product has a thick, yoghurt-like texture. Seemed like a real pore clogger to me.
However, once applied, I was astounded. I barely feel the lotion on my skin at all!
It glides over the skin, naturally and easily, and then sets like a thin film of air. There isn’t the slightest feeling of heaviness or stickiness. The lotion also contains Chlorella Extract, an ingredient that can help calm skin inflammation and promote healthy functioning, which I felt really helped to soothe my sensitive skin too!
I further put the R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion to the test. Application wise, I placed a pearl-size amount into my palm and dot it on my forehead, cheeks, and chin. From there, I spread it evenly across my entire face, starting in the center and moving outwards. I used it as a day cream under makeup and went to work. To my surprise, my skin was a-okay. No break outs or reactions. In fact, my skin felt restored and ultra-moisturized.
I started experimenting more after that and found it worked as night cream too. Because it’s so light, I could treat my face while I sleep and then apply it as a primer the next morning.
Additionally, the R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion is also an anti-ageing cream which means that it won’t just keep our skin moisturized but also youthful-looking and radiant. Another win by SK-II!
Glow brighter without flare-ups
I tend to shy away from skin-whitening products cause it doesn’t sit well with my sensitive skin. But for the sake of this SK-II review, I stuck my neck out and tried SK-II’s GenOptics Aura Essence which is a whitening-serum made with Japanese plum extract, a fruit known for its antioxidant and anti-glycation properties. Antioxidants are also great for sensitive skin like mine, because they help to protect it against free radicals that can damage skin cells and cause inflammation.
When I tried the serum, I wasn’t sure how my skin would react to it. I applied a full dropper onto my palm and use my fingertips to put it on areas of concern first. With the leftover, I spread it all over my face and gently pressed in for absorption. The opaque formula has a delightful scent, and like the essence and moisturizer, it had a lightweight texture that absorbed into the skin almost instantly.
After applying, I started counting down the seconds until my face would start stinging. To my surprise (and relief), and guess what? I’m still counting! My face was perfectly comfortable with the serum and I heaved a sigh of relief.
I’ll admit, aside from feeling relieved, my skin felt uber hydrated and had a sheen to it. This lil bottle sure packs a punch of hydration.
Obviously, it will take a while to notice a difference in skin tone. For me, that was about two weeks and I must say, I do look different.
With this Aura Essence, not only was my skin brighter, some of my age spot also became less visible. It’s been a while since I looked this fresh!
Last note: Another thing I liked about the GenOptics Aura Essence is the auto-fill dropper, which saved me the hassle of digging my fingers into a pot or squeeze too much or too little from a pump, the dropper dispenses a precise amount of product into my palm.
Since I’m a sucker for convenient beauty products, I thought I’d include that.
Okay, so…
If you want skincare that’s friendly with your skin’s sensitivities, I highly recommend SK-II and its products, especially the PITERA™ Facial Treatment Essence.
My overall review on SK-II: After incorporating the SK-II’s PITERA™ Facial Treatment Essence, GenOptics Aura Essence and R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion into my routine for more than a week, I was impressed. There was no red-hot reaction and my skin started improving. By the end of two weeks, my breakouts lessened, and my skin felt soothed. My boyfriend even said I had a glow. And I had no makeup on.
While it’s on the costlier side of skincare products, I can’t deny the long-term, radiant, youthful, healthy skin results from this SK-II review. For that, I don’t mind plunging deeper into my pockets because it’s hard finding reliable products that agree with my skin!
I have to say, there’s no doubt about it. SK-II works for me – my sensitive skin and I are absolutely happy with how good SK-II and the wonderful PITERA™ are. Looks like we’ve found a permanent solution to my skincare journey! No matter your skin type, I recommend you try it out too! You can also check out SK-II’s guide to perfecting your skincare regimen!
