OMEGA, the iconic Swiss watchmaker, is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a historic moment that solidified the Speedmaster’s legendary status as the “Moonwatch”. Fifty-five years ago, history was made as humans first set foot on the moon, with astronaut Buzz Aldrin wearing the iconic OMEGA Speedmaster Professional – the first watch worn on the moon.
This historic moment for OMEGA watches in space exploration is being featured in a new movie, “Fly Me to the Moon,” where OMEGA is highlighted as the official watch of NASA.
Selected from among several watch brands, the Speedmaster proved its resilience by passing stringent tests for thermal, shock, vibration, and vacuum conditions. Its outstanding performance led to its official qualification for all NASA manned space missions in 1965.
The Speedmaster accompanied astronauts on the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, ultimately becoming a symbol of human achievement when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took those historic first steps on the moon.
Today, OMEGA commemorates this extraordinary milestone, paying tribute to the Speedmaster’s enduring legacy and its role in one of humanity’s greatest adventures. The watch continues to be a testament to OMEGA’s pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to precision.
