High Intensity Interval Training Sessions (HIIT) is when you alternate between high and low intensity exercise(s) or between high intensity exercise and a short period of rest. This form of exercise is one of the top fitness trends for 2017 according to a survey conducted by The American College of Sports Medicine.
The benefits of HIIT are many. Today we are going to discuss five reasons why you should do more HIIT workouts.
1. No equipment necessary. To achieve true high intensity, use your body weight instead of an equipment. Because the point of HIIT is to get your heart rate up and keeping it there. These workouts result in “optimal muscle building and muscle retention couples with fat loss and increased calorie burn,” says Eric Salvador, NASM, NSCA, head instructor at The Fitting Room in New York City.
2. Fast and convenient. HIIT is one of the most effective and efficient workouts for people who don’t have enough time. The workout helps you burn fat in a short span of time. Most are 20 minutes or less. Besides that, you can do it anywhere, at home, in a park, at the beach, etc.
3. You burn more fat. Besides burning more calories per minute, studies suggest that the afterburn effect of HIIT can last up to 24 to 48 hours after training. That means your body will be burning fat and calories a long time after the training session.
4. Lose fat without losing muscle. You want fat loss, but you also want to preserve muscle mass, HIIT is the best way to go. HIIT workouts allow dieters to preserve their hard-earned muscles while ensuring most of the weight lost comes from fat stores.
5. You’ll increase your metabolism.“HIIT also allows for a fantastic postexercise metabolic boost called the EPOC effect,” says personal trainer Ashley Borden. HIIT stimulates production of your human growth hormone (HGH) by up to 450 percent during the 24 hours after you finish your workout. This is great news since HGH is not only responsible for increased caloric burn but also slows down the aging process, making you younger both inside and out!
