The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre transformed into a vibrant hub of jazz music and culture on July 14th, 2024, as the inaugural Royal Selangor Jazz Festival brought together music lovers of all ages and backgrounds.
Graced by the presence of K.D.P.B Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Binti Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-haj, the festival served as a delightful introduction to jazz for newcomers and a joyous homecoming for seasoned enthusiasts.
From 10 am to 10 pm, the venue buzzed with energy as 19 talented artists took turns captivating audiences across four stages. Renowned names like Tay Cher Siang, Janet Lee, The Frankie Sixes, WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble, The Shang Sisters, FAZZ, and David Gomes delivered unforgettable performances. The festival also offered a platform for rising stars like Kirana Kay, Rizal Tony, and Jiu Shi Yi (JSY) to showcase their talents.
Beyond the music, the day was packed with engaging activities for all ages. An insightful talk titled “Irama & Lagu: Searching for Malaysian Identity in Jazz” by Cher Siang and TEDx speaker Az Samad sparked conversations about the genre’s local roots. Attendees enjoyed jam sessions, jazz film screenings, and a vibrant food truck scene, offering a perfect blend of music and culinary delights.
A dedicated children’s corner with colouring activities and jazz quizzes kept younger attendees entertained. Special promotions on Royal Selangor pewterware, Comyns batik, and Selberan tableware, along with a bazaar showcasing jazz merchandise, vinyl records, and handcrafted instruments, provided a unique shopping experience. Even the workshops on pewter smithing drew enthusiastic participation.
The Royal Selangor Jazz Festival was a cornerstone event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre. Just recently, the center secured the prestigious #6 spot on TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best Things to Do list.
