Have you always been curious about some of the leading ladies from Malaysia’s social media scene? To feed your curiosity, we’re doing a new series called #PamperGirlPowerTalks where we get to know more about these personalities and their journey to being one of the #GirlPower leaders in their industries.
Starting off with one of Malaysia’s most popular Food Instagrammers and winner of the Top Food Influencer Award of Influence Asia 2017, get to know, Eunice Martin Lim (aka euniceeunny).
1. How did you feel when they announced you as the Top Food Influencer of Malaysia of 2017? How long was your journey as one that got you where you are today?
It was a moment of shock, joy and disbelief all rolled into one for me! I would say I started experimenting and seeing things grow from the age 19 until this day.
2. What has inspired you to be a food photographer/stylist?
I’m always curious on experimenting with different types of texture, medium and visual appearances. So naturally, I think all these elements helped in gravitating me to using food as a subject. I guess being a foodie helps too!
3. We’ve noticed you done a few collections which are a mix of food and daily things such as paper and bulbs, what goes through your mind when you create these mix media elements? How do you keep your creative juices flowing?
The main thing I focus on is recreating an original item. I observe on the sort of textures and feel of the items I’m dealing with. Then, I transfer that perception to other elements that take on a similar vibe or texture and try it on to see if it can “fit” the image I want to recreate. I’m constantly on the Internet searching for new inspirations through platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to see what the current creative society is up to.
4. What are your 3 golden rules for nailing a flat lay and closeup shot?
-
For flat lays, make sure you have sufficient light and see if your light source comes from the side and not behind or in front of you, to avoid casting a shadow.
- As for closeups, less is more. Try to maintain a clean or neutral background to avoid any distraction from your subject.
- Hands are shaky naturally so when you really need to focus on a subject, don’t be afraid to get a tripod to help you.
5. What are your top 3 cafes/restaurants that have good food and is also Instagrammable?
- VCR – Love love love their French Toast! Every element on the plate was made in house. From the toast to the ice cream and the last bit of crumbs, this dish is nothing short of amazing. The food presentation was lovely too! Kudos to the creator!
- J&D Espresso – I highly recommend their Carbonara & Bacon and Egg pancakes. It’s nothing fancy or extraordinary, but honestly, I hadn’t been disappointed with their food & coffee. Consistent is the key here!
- Nara Kitchen at Damansara Utama – Though their prices are steep, but the quality of food is great. I have visited it a few times with my friends and they loved it! Every single dish was very instagrammable too!
6. Since Father’s Day is coming soon, do you have any good food spots to recommend for our readers?
I’m thinking Palillos at Changkat (it’s a lovely Spanish yakitori place!), or Lao Jiu Lou where you can have affordable ramen and sake!
